About used books
Our books are usually second hand and our descriptions of book conditions are those commonly used in the second hand book trade. Please read our definitions and if you are not familiar with second hand books try to visualise some examples. We cannot accept returns unless our description is materially inaccurate but we do not want you to be disappointed.
Mint - the book is as new.
Fine - the book can be seen to have been used but is generally in near perfect condition. There may be a neat inscription by a previous owner and you can expect to see signs of storage on a bookshelf.
Very Good(VG) - the book is slightly less than fine, has obviously been used and will be blemished. The dust jacket will show signs of minor wear and tear.
Good - the book is sound and serviceable but may be stained, faded, bumped, annotated or abused in any of the many ways known to man. Repairs may be obvious. The endpaper may have been removed, often in an attempt to hide library ownership. Good is a very broad condition and we like to amplify it with a description of the major faults.
Poor - the book suffers from structural damage. Hinges and spine may be badly cracked, pages may be loose and whilst the book will be readable, rarity may be its only redeeming feature.
We re-examine all books before despatch. It is our policy to down grade borderline cases. We appreciate Joseph Connolly's (Modern First Editions) illuminating comments on book descriptions and hope that ours are of a good standard.
